< Kwon Kisoo’s Solo Exhibition>

The part Ⅰ: Plantain(芭蕉)_ Permanent Blue_ September 6th – 28th, 2019

The part Ⅱ : Drawing_ September 30th – October 19th, 2019

ATELIER AKI is pleased to announce a solo exhibition by Korean-based artist Kwon Kisoo. It has been 4 years since Kwon Kisoo had held his solo show in Korea. The exhibition will be divided into 2 parts; The part one is called Permanent Blue [September 6th to 28th] and the part two will be consisted of his drawing series [September 30th to October 19th]. His transition works that cover throughout the times from the past to the present will be shown at his solo show.

The artworks done by Kwon Kisoo are very oriental. He was the first of his generation artists to produce art works that embraces both Eastern and Western ideologies and techniques in painting. By utilizing with acrylic and oil painting, he is acknowledged as a bridge like figure which enabled Korean traditional arts forms to evolve in conjunction with the post-modern art from the west.

Dongguri is an important factor in his paintings. It is a simplified line-drawn figure which reminds of Korean ink. Dongguri, which always appears with a smiley-faced, is the expression of saints and wise man who had been respected for the virtue and wisdom for ages long. Kwon Kisoo serves a sense of alienation and isolation through the use of Dongguri. This is the one of the way of expressing one’s own life towards the outside world. He’d like to turn his back on from the chaotic world, and he represents his oriental sense into the modern expression.

In Kwon Kisoo’s paintings, the landscapes, which are adopting from the story of Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove and Kang Hui-An’s irrigation, stand on the basis of Korean traditions. The materials were the Four Gracious Plants (plum, orchid, chrysanthemum and bamboo) and they had been described into contemporary style. At the part one, his new works on 'plantain series' will be showcased. The artist mainly focused on the subject of the plantain which has been the primary medium of Flower Bird Painting in Joseon. It is important to take a look at his works while meditating the meaning of the plantain involves itself. His outstanding plantain series will overwhelm audiences just by looking at the beautiful colors and the settings as well.

The expression on the ‘plantain series also re-evaluates on the basis of Korean landscapes. At the early painting from Joseon, artists were used to elaborate the mountains magnificently and they had been described human figures and animals very small. Based on this, the landscape had been coming into the front and the human figure, Dongguri, had been put as small into his new paintings. Kwon Kisoo had been reinterpreted Korean landscapes based on the tradition into.

At the part two, new paintings on ‘drawings’ based on the origin of Dongguri will be displayed. In this series, it is quite different than as his past works consisting of different medium. Commonly, in Korean painting, the performance on ‘Making strokes with a brush’ has been described as Kwon Kisoo’s style of painting. His freely expressed artworks will be presented at this exhibition.

Different from his early works that had been done on ink-and-wash painting, he has been maximized the essential of Korean traditions through his recent paintings. He erased the ones that they were used to be shown which were the primary colors on the background, and he put Dongguri instead of all the simplified lines. The Dongguri represents the nowadays people’s situations about when people are having confusions and intimidating from the society. Dark appearance was shown with his own sensibility such as his freedom. He’d like to suggest a new direction to communicate and sympathize with others throughout his art works.
