Kwon Ki-soo’s Dongguri gives us a feeling of closeness with its pared-down, simple face and body everyone probably ever did as a child. Dongguri, executed in black and white only, is a cute, smiling character with just a few hairs. It has played the leading part in Kwon’s work. The artist said this character was created by accident while rendering orchids in Oriental painting with swift, aggressive brush strokes. Dongguri is diversely represented in a wide variety of media such as sculpture, installation, and drawing.

Kwon’s Dongguri has been also reproduced as the character products of varied forms for children. Due to its frequent exposure to the public, Dongguri has been considered by both viewers and critics as one of the Pop Art icons. While in Pop Art symbolized images or their distorted ones are often used as its subject matter, Kwon makes use of his own symbols or objects obtained through his lengthy explorations of drawing.

After graduating from university, Kwon Ki-soo captured daily aspects of modern man in his ink painting. Kwon mainly created his works by putting human figures on the wall after cutting them from their ink drawings on paper. Even at a glance, they seemed to be in a sharp contrast to the gallery’s white space, evoking a feeling of weight. In these works featuring human figures in black ink, the artist remained rather critical to life in contemporary society.

Like other contemporary artists who contemplate and the society they belong to, Kwon Ki-soo straightforwardly described the life sufferings of modern man. Smiling Dongguri like a cartoon character is the conversion of not only his expression, but also his view of modern man. Through this icon always smiling in many different situations, Kwon represents modern man or the artist himself.

Kwon’s work has remained rooted in the tradition of Oriental painting and thus seemed lied in a leisurely mood. The look of Dongguri appears to be joyful, filled with the innocence of a child and friendly with nature, different from any contemporary artworks complex, hard to understand. The beauty of blank space is also sensed in his paintings in which Dongguri and any natural subject matter take part of the canvas.

Discovered in the subject matter of his work is also the essence of Oriental painting. In his recent work “Black Forest ? Seven” the artist depicts Dongguri playing leisurely with a puppy in the bamboo groves of varied colors. This painting is derived from one of the Oriental painting techniques, a technique for rendering bamboos. The forms of flowers regularly appeared in his pieces are apricot blossoms, which frequently emerge in Oriental painting. In this work Kwon wittily translates the look of Dongguri into the seven sages of a bamboo grove.

Despite the theme and subject matter of Kwon’s art derived from Oriental painting, it’s difficult to refer to that as a work of Oriental painting or Korean painting. In addition, he works in a wide variety of media, including sculpture, installation, and video together with his painting work. As a genre of contemporary art that merges the essence of Eastern art with a Western motif, his art is a modified version of neither Korean painting nor Korean Pop art.

The artist himself refuses to embrace any categorization of his art, Oriental painting or Western painting. As if contemporary art has been dynamically developing in a variety of subject matters and themes, his art world cannot be defined as a reflection of any specific tendency in art history. It’s obvious that Kwon Ki-soo’s work has been inspired by the Korean sensibility and nature of Oriental painting, and reproduced them with a contemporary feel.
