If a certain message meant by a sender is not restructured by its receiver in a communication, then that communication is regarded as a failure. However, even in such a failed communication, restructuring of meaning occurs. This is to say that a sign does not possess one singular meaning, and, instead, can have multiple meanings. In particular, a sign represented by a symbol is essentially of multiple meanings, and accordingly a communication using such signs of multiple meanings could become a failure anytime.

In response to such a communication of message signifiant so called, 'Dongguri' by Kwon, Ki-Soo attempts to communicate with spectators through Roland Gerard Barthes' denotation (a subject directed by Dongguri) and connotation(another internal existence given to Dongguri). It provides a room for different interpretations among the spectators because, if one look at it with a superficial observation, it has a structure that seems light but is quite elaborated on one hand and it possesses the accuracy that does not allow even a minute error on the other hand. However, Kwon, Ki-Soo's Dongguri does not fail in the communication even under such a condition because it uses signifiant originated strictly from Asian way of thinking.

This Dongguri may be speculated through different subjective interpretations by the spectators, and this allows the existences of new signifies that expand continuously. According to the interpretation by Ryu, Cheol-Ha, a researcher of Woljeon Art Gallery's Arts and Sciences Research Center, the images represented by signifiant as shown on the Kwon, Ki-Soo's work reveals internally the violence stemming from a suppressed force, relationship, and a realization of social status. Therefore, if one regards knives, guns, and bats as potential violence, then flowers could be regarded as a will to harmonize, cooperate and reconciliate. Kim, Ki-Yong, the director of Alternative Space Art Space Hue, pointed out in "Symbols' images and aesthetic reemergence" that Kwon, Ki-Soo's symbolic images remind one of the accidential nature and the emptiness of a meaning and lost objects and subjects.

The reason why the Dongguri's smile is interpreted as the violence or the loss of the self seems to be due to his works in "The Show", his first exhibition held in Gwanhoon Gallery in 1998. A crowd in black costumes in his work represents a way of expressing the social suppression and confusion in identity.

The same applies to the Dongguri's image in the initial period. It is smiling but the grotesque and speedy nature of the brush touch on the drawing is revealing the gloominess. The works of Kwon, Ki-Soo, who then was researching many things while immersed in a deep thinking about the contemporary political and social conditions, have evolved to the present works of his.

The smile of Dongguri is meant to be the warm and gentle facial expression unique to Korean placid smile. Korean buddhist statues wear contemplating and faint smiles on their faces, being different from Chinese buddhist statues of authoritative atmosphere, and also from Japanese counterparts which are sweet and charming. By adopting such subtle and placid smile, it became a representative and symbol for a person who has escaped from the impressions of the cuteness and the playfulness.

Kwon, Ki-Soo's work should be explored in the context different from American-style illustrations. From the old days budd has have weared faint smiles, carrying the impression of benevolent bodhisattva. It is said, "Dongguri's smile may be considered as a Korean signifiant." Such an evolvement cannot be interpreted as the violence or the lost selfness as in the past.

It is because the effort was exerted to explore the Asian culture itself in the global main stream, not tied to the social oppression imposed by Korea as a group. Kwon, Ki-Soo studies the entities that are thoroughly Asiatic and Korean, saying, "Symbols were studied seriously in the Western academia, but they have been developed much more in Asia because its characters are of hieroglyphic condensing symbols into the letters. For example, the Westerners would not have been able to even imagine the symbol into which a book of paintings such as Gyejawon was condensed as a whole."

In the Far East, it was not that important how the representation is done, but it is more important how well a painting can exhibit the internal expressional ability, and accordingly, the painting works have shown strongly the element of image-to-perception conversion. In order to interpret such an Asian element in the modern way, Kwon, Ki-Soo represents the flowers and bamboo trees, which represent an ume flower, by long stick shapes of various colors, starting from the plum, orchid, chrysanthemum and bamboo, which are the four gracious plants in Asian paintings, after evolving through simplifying process to convert it to a symbol.

One of the reasons why the spiritual exploration into the Asian ideology has been deepened is related to the Western material called acrylic. He was treated as a heretic because he used the Western painting materials to draw Asiatic paintings. To him it is not important what kinds of substances and materials are to be used, or in what way the expression is made.

A fact that he uses the silk-screen technique or a Western material called varnish does not have anything to do with his ideology. Therefore, he tries harder to approach his works spiritually. His works possess the meaning of overlays as they are prepared through the silk-screen as the base and applying then additional touches amounting to ten layers or more, while differentiating the sense of colors strictly and without an inch of false step.

The change from the Chinese ink to acrylic shows materialistic difference even though the both are of black color. As the pronoun for the difference he draws most of Dongguris in black color. Such a work, which is sublimated through spiritual exchange, is trying to represent the free state void of all the bindings of the human's mundane world, and is corresponding to the state of Buddhist emancipation.

The reconversion to broad mental vision that looks around the overall oriental thought in such a Korean society status ensures to present the course to his identification problem. Pop art series works which are named as Korean pop, the pop of Korea, K-pop, etc. Among them, Kwon, Ki-Soo thinks that Korean specific features should be considered rather than indiscrete acceptance. First of all, he recognized that English pop arts indicate an attribute of popular culture critical to existing standards and customs with its social critical intention, and American pop arts has the specific feature that attacks the eliticism of pure high quality art by using the repetitive description, voluntary color seasoning, and subject matters in everyday life. Kwon, Ki-Soo thought that his works fit into a category of pop art in view of dichotomy between the pure art and popular art ,and destruction of the hierarchical structure. And he begins to accommodate an ume flower and bamboo with a thought of the root within a genre of so called pop art. At the same time, the five colored venerable oriental colors emerge in his works with falling into children innocence. However, he sublates Dongguri to be used as a terminology of character, because he does not like that his works are analyzed to be only a pop art. Target objective that remind a character product really secures the popular image and acts the expression and reproduction to be enabled. However, he thinks that the negation of uniqueness and destruction of originality are not future oriented. Instead, he issues his own image, so called Dongguri so that he secures his own field. He who excludes a fundamentally presented character in the play and wants to accept his works like he directs “like actors not the cast of play”, succeeds genealogy of the modern pop art and secures his own field at the same time.

In this Kwon, Ki-Soo exhibition, his embroidery works are newly shown under such a background. Bedclothes in the life means the Korean everyday life, and is an expression of naturally grazing feeling so called the skinship in the relationship between man and man. Particularly, in connection with a subtitle of the exhibition, <4 seasons>, he considers that the form so called mat+blanket+sheet is frequently used in Korea where four seasons exist, and makes his works by handicraft. Like the work so called Dongguri, which is used to be misconceived as a character, he shows an endless spirit of inquiry against media by absorbing the bedclothes and handicraft things so called the embroidery into his works.
