색죽色竹

네 가지 풀나무꽃을 우러러 이념화하여 명색이 사군자로 굳은 건 명말 청초였다. 명색名色이란 문자대로 풀면 이름과 색이다. 이름만 있고 형상이 없는 게 사상이요 이념이라는 관념이다.

네 가지 풀나무꽃에 굳은 생각을 씌웠으니 바야흐로 이는 풀나무꽃이되 풀나무꽃이 아니었다. 문자향文字香이든 서권기書卷氣든 스며야 비로소 사군자라는 풀나무꽃이 될 수 있었다.

여기에 이의를 달고 다른 붓질을 내밀면 수묵화 세계에서 이단이기 십상이었다. 전통이라는 아주 굳은 틀 안에서 재주를 피워내야 했다.

이 전시에서 만날 수 있는 색죽色竹 Colour Bamboo은 이름에서 벌써 아주 딴판인 대나무다. 권기수는 형상과 색에서 사군자를 전혀 다르게 해석하면서 그 세계를 해체하여 현대 회화 언어로 재구성하고 있다. 네 가지 풀나무꽃에 진작부터 더러 색 물감을 쓰기는 하였으나 감히 대나무에는 오래도록 색이 침범하지 못하고 있었다. 작가는 그 대나무에 서슴없이 놀랍도록 화려한 물감을 입히고 있다. 그에 따라 묵죽墨竹이라는 관념이 품고 있던 지조 따위와는 다른 세상을 눈 앞에 펼쳐내고 있다.

‘색죽’은 마디마디 색을 달리하면서 화폭에서 음계처럼 작동한다. 마침내 색죽은 그림 밖으로 나와 사람들 사이를 지나고 있다. 색죽 설치다. 그건 전통 대나무 울타리와 닮았으되 색죽들의 향연이다. 색죽 23년 만에 대나무가 색옷을 입고 공간을 활보하기에 이른 것이다. 색죽 죽림, 곧 색이 춤추는 대숲이라고 해도 좋다. 거기서 색의 율격을 듣든 음악소리를 보든, 이는 색죽과 만나는 이의 몫이다. 분명한 건 새로운 대나무, 곧 색죽 출현이다.

Colour Bamboo

It was in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties that the name and colour of the “Four Gracious Plants” was established by revering four types of grasses, trees, and flowers. “Myungseck” (명색名色) literally means “name” and “colour”. It is a concept that something which only has a name and no form is an idea.

A firm thought was placed on the four grasses, trees, and flowers, and now they were grasses, trees, and flowers, but they were not flowers of grass and trees. Only when it permeates Munjahyang(the fragrance of words, 文字香) or Seogwongi (the energy of books, 書卷氣), can it finally become the grasses, trees, and flowers called the “Four Gracious Plants”.

If you objected to this and offered a different brush stroke, it would be considered heresy in the world of ink wash painting. Talent had to be developed within the stiff framework of tradition.

“Colour Bamboo” (색죽色竹), which can be seen in this exhibition, is a bamboo that differs entirely from its name. Kwon Kisoo interprets the Four Gracious Plants in a completely different way in terms of shape and colour, deconstructing that world and reconstructing it in the language of modern painting. Color paints have long been used on the four grasses, trees, and flowers, but colours dared not invade the bamboo for a long time. The artist does not hesitate to apply surprisingly colourful paints to the bamboo. Accordingly, a world different from the principle that was harboured by the idea of Mukjuk(Ink Bamboo墨竹) is unfolding before our eyes.

“Colour Bamboo” operates like a musical scale on the canvas by varying the colours of each bar. At last, the Colour Bamboo comes out of the painting and passes among the people. It's an installation of Colour Bamboo. It resembles a traditional bamboo fence, but is a feast of Colour Bamboo. For the first time in 23 years, bamboo has come to strut around the space wearing colourful clothes. It can be said to be a forest of Colour Bamboo, or a Bamboo Forest with dancing colours. Whether you hear the rhythm of the colours or see the sound of music, it is up to the person who encounters the Colour Bamboo. What is clear is the emergence of a new Bamboo, Colour Bamboo.
